If you have recently gotten Invisaligns, the chances are that your dentist has recommended Invisalign chewies. Invisalign is an effective orthodontic treatment that uses clear aligners to straighten your teeth and treat a misaligned bite without anyone noticing. Each aligner in the series works to move your teeth slightly over time and these are used as an alternative to traditional braces. For your aligners to work well, they need to fit tightly over your teeth each time you wear them.

Unfortunately, some patients have trouble fitting their aligners close enough to their teeth, resulting in unsatisfactory results. This is where Invisalign chewies come in. Invisalign chewies are specially designed to help your aligners fit perfectly onto your teeth, speeding up the treatment process. If you are new to this, read on to know what Invisalign chewies are, how to use them and why you need them.

What are Invisalign chewies?

Invisalign chewies are small dental devices used to eliminate the spaces between your teeth and aligners. They help to place your new set of Invisalign trays perfectly onto your teeth helping them to move faster. They also help to ease pain after getting your aligners. They are typically made of a soft, plastic-like material.

Invisalign chewies are about the size and shape of a cotton roll or a pencil grip

Types of Invisalign chewies

Invisalign chewies come in different colours and flavours. They can come as white unscented or in several colours with scents. For instance, yellow chewies come in a pineapple flavour whereas pink chewies come with a bubblegum flavour. The scents help to make them a bit more pleasant to chew on than the plain white unscented alternatives.

How to use Invisalign chewies

Before using Invisalign chewies, start by cleaning your teeth and aligners. Then thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water to protect your oral and general health from germs.

Wear the aligners as directed by your dentist until they fit as snugly as possible. Once you wear your aligners, follow the following steps:

Step 1: Pick the right chewies

Although regular chewies are typically designed to be reused multiple times, always choose one that has not lost its elasticity. Most chewies lose their effectiveness after several sessions.

Step 2: Bite on the chewie

This is the most important step to using Invisalign chewies

  • Place the chewie between your upper and lower teeth. We highly recommend starting with your back teeth
  • Hold onto the chewie and bite it down for 5-10 few seconds. This will help the aligners sit tightly on your teeth
  • Next, move the chewie to a different area of the mouth preferably on the same side you started and bite it down until your aligners feel comfortable on your teeth
  • Repeat the process on the rest of your teeth and don’t forget to wait at least 5-10 seconds for each bite
  • Ensure you bite down on the chewie at least 2 times on all your teeth before removing it. This is crucial since the more you use it, the quicker you get the results

This session should take between 5-10 minutes.

Step 3: Removing the chewie

Once you are done biting it down on all your teeth, remove the chewie from your mouth. Since you can reuse the chewie, wash it with clean water and mild soap and then dry it to prevent germs from accumulating on it. Store the chewie in an aligner seater case.

Benefits of using Invisalign chewies

There are several benefits to using Invisalign chewies, including:

  • They help fit your Invisalign aligners properly: Biting down on a chewie helps your aligners fit more snugly to your teeth
  • The remove air gaps stuck between Invisalign trays and teeth: Biting down on a chewie forces any air bubbles stuck between your teeth and aligners out
  • They boost the teeth straightening process: By biting down on a chewie a few times a day, it helps your aligners fit tightly against your teeth. This increases the likelihood of straightening your teeth in good time

Side effects of using chewies

Generally, when you put in aligners, they apply gentle pressure on your teeth in order to move them. This can cause pain or discomfort especially if it’s your first time or when you switch to new aligners. While these feelings of discomfort are often caused by the aligners, chewies may contribute as well.

Since they require repeated biting motion, they can cause your jaw to become slightly sore. However, this pain or discomfort typically goes away over time. In the meantime, you can ease this pain with an over-the-counter pain reliever.

Invisalign chewies alternatives

Chewies are just one type of Invisalign aligner seaters. Some of the other options include:

Movemints: These are an edible alternative to chewies. They are specially designed to push aligners tightly over your teeth when chewing.

Munchies: This is another great alternative to chewies that varies in hardness. Munchies are made of silicone and return to their original shape after you bite them.

Taking care of your Invisalign chewies

After each use, wash your Invisalign chewies with mild soap and water for 20 seconds. Make sure to dry them properly before putting them back in their case. With proper care, chewies should last you several sessions before they lose their elasticity and accumulate bacteria, which can be detrimental to your oral health.

How often should I use chewies with Invisalign?

Use your chewies at least twice a day with each session taking about 5-10 minutes each. You can also choose to use them more than twice if you want to speed up the process, especially whenever you remove your aligners and place them back on your teeth.

Do chewies speed up the Invisalign treatment?

When used properly, chewies stimulate the movement of teeth by ensuring a proper fit of your retainers. To get the most out of your Invisalign chewies, use them at least twice a day for about 5-10 minutes per session. If you are not getting the results you expected, try to chew on them a little longer.

Are Invisalign chewies reusable?

Yes. you can reuse your Invisalign chewies until they lose their elasticity. Also, make sure to change the chewies whenever you change your aligner trays- usually after a week or two.

Overall, using Invisalign chewies the right way and regularly helps to speed the tooth movement process and to get the best results. We highly recommend using the chewies before going to bed. This is because they will help the aligners sit tightly on your teeth the whole night and work effectively.
